Brevity of Life
by A.J. Wilson

“Go to now, ye that say, to day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.  For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.  But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.  Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.”  James 4:13-17

This week’s devotional is almost straight from the pages of Facebook, and totally from the pages of God’s Word, the Bible.  With our recent snowfall, there have been many posts about not worrying about the details of life, but spending time making memories.  The elder generations always tell us, “Your kids will grow up before you know it, enjoy it while they are young.”  After hearing this so much, it has become a suggestion that often comes in one ear and out the other, at least for me.  Yet if you look at the scripture above, and many like it in the Bible, God is telling us the same thing, life is just a vapor.

God reminds us of the brevity of life in many contexts in the Bible.  Our plans do not always include God, and He reminds us that He is the one in control (Luke 12:16-20).  We also need to remember that while on Earth we are storing eternal treasures in Heaven, and these are the only things that truly last (Math 6:20).  Our days are numbered, and we have a scheduled appointment for death; we shall neither die prematurely nor add time to our life (Heb 9:27). Yet most importantly, there is no time for procrastination when it comes to securing a relationship with Jesus Christ: for today is the day of salvation (Heb 3).

We must not let the many events which have surrounded our church recently go by unnoticed.  We have been reminded of life’s shortness; therefore share with those you love your testimony for your sakes and theirs.  Urge those who have put off salvation to reconsider before it is too late.  If God asks you to do something, do it as it may be the only chance you get.  God has reminded us that it is time for us to get to work!
