Effort for the End
by A.J. Wilson

“But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. . . Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing,” Math 24:36, 46

“And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” Math 25:40

The 21st Olympic Games have begun in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.  In watching the opening ceremonies, of course, several things struck me.  It was said that roughly half of the eighty-some countries participating, have never won a Winter Olympic medal; these nations are sending one, or maybe a handful of competitors to be ambassadors to the world.  No one expects great things out of them, just a respectable showing with character and integrity.  As for the athletes, to be at this level they train for hours everyday; expecting to be “ready” for any situation that the Games bring them.

We can look at being Christians in a similar light.  The New Testament often compares our lives to a race (Acts 20:24, 1 Cor 9:24, Heb 12:1.)  Most of us are not superstars expecting to get any special recognition.  We are not usually asked by God to do spectacular things, only live a life of character and integrity while we “run the race.”  Paul was able to say “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” (2 Tim 4:7)  Can you say you are training yourself and “fighting a good fight?”

If you can’t answer that question the way you would like, don’t give up hope, but continue with the disciplines of prayer, Bible reading, and service.  Also take counsel in this quote, apply it to your daily walk:

"Don't give up, don't ever give up." That's what I'm going to try to do every minute that I have left. I will thank God for the day and the moment I have. – Jim Valvano 1993 ESPY Speech, founder of the Jimmy V foundation for Cancer Research.
