Everyone has a Story
by A.J. Wilson

“13 But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. . . .18 Therefore comfort one another with these words.” 1 Thessalonians 4:13, 18

“But now thus saith the Lord that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, ‘Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by they name; thou art mine.  When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee; when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.  For I am the Lord thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Savior:” Isaiah 43:1-3a (see also chap 61:1-3)

“Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.  Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.”  Matthew 5:3-5

How often have you been at a celebration, surrounded by many happy people, yet still feel sad and alone?  Many situations we find ourselves in leave us feeling sad and depressed even when many around us are at their happiest, we ask ourselves “Am I the only one who feels this pain?”  Good News (sort of), you are not alone.  There are likely many people around you that feel the same way but may not be showing it, or it manifests itself as a bad attitude or mood.  More than this, everyone has a story to tell, some dark time in their life, or hidden scar from a hurt during their life that occasionally surfaces and brings back the sadness and mourning.  Luckily we do not all have these experiences at the same time, which allows us to be comforters, and shoulders to cry on for those suffering now.  And wait, there’s more. . .

The great news is: as a Christian there are always three others ready and willing to help us during our crises; God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit.  Jesus is there to say, “I’ve been there”, the Holy Spirit will bring to mind familiar scriptures for comfort, and God is waiting to provide a miracle if it is needed.  The Bible says “Ask, and it shall be given you;” (Matt 7:7a) yet often we don’t ask.  Sometimes the Holy Spirit can also use others who are willing to follow his leading, to provide needed comfort.  So remember to always seek God first in all things, and remember as a church family, I hope to speak for all, “We are here for you when you need us.”
