It Could Happen in a Moment
by A.J. Wilson

“He who is slow to wrath has great understanding, But he who is impulsive exalts folly.” Prov. 14:29

“Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come , who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God” 1 Cor. 4:5

"Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.’’ Phil. 4:5-7

“So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath;“ James 1:19

This week in baseball there was a chance for a pitcher to enter the exclusive ranks of history by throwing a perfect game.  This rare feat of retiring all 27 batters that face the pitcher, with no hits or walks, has only been accomplished by 20 men in the history of America’s favorite pastime.  Armando Galarraga was one call away from this feat, and his reaction is what is so amazing.  With two outs in the ninth inning, he fielded a ground ball toward first, beat the runner to the base, but to everyone’s surprise the umpire called the runner safe.  What did Galarraga do? Both in the seconds that followed, and the post game interviews he forgave the umpire for a human mistake.  The decision by the umpire only took a few seconds, but has lasting effects on the record books, and possibly his reputation.

What all can happen in a moment in our lives?  Imagine all the sins that have occurred in a moment when Satan was able to mix the right amount of anger, disgust, hatred, loneliness, or desperation with an opportunity to act.  I doubt that many of our sins are premeditated or planned out, they just happen in a moment of weakness.  This reminds us that it is all the more important to stay in touch with God every day through prayer and Bible reading.  He can help us to be slow to action, just as He is slow to anger (Psalms 103:8) against our sins.

It also takes but a moment to be saved.  God accepts a prepared heart with full rights and privileges as His son/daughter, from the very first moment.  Have you taken that moment? Today can be your salvation!
