Luke's Gospel
by A.J. Wilson

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear; 1 Peter 3:15

I like the last of the ‘Synoptic’ gospels, Luke, the best.  Synoptic is just a word that means “seeing together”, and it describes Matthew, Mark, and Luke because they record so many of the same events (often even in similar language.)  I enjoy Luke because of his attention to detail, and his life seems to be a link from the twelve to Paul.

Luke was not an eyewitness to Jesus’ ministry, yet he is able to include many details that the others did not include.  You see the Gospels are like a biography of Jesus, and the easiest way to write a biography of someone is to actually be apart of their life and experience it with them.  Luke did not travel with Jesus, but the way he was able to write thoroughly was by interviewing eyewitnesses and doing his research. (Luke 1:1-4)  Don’t get the wrong idea, Luke was still inspired by the Holy Spirit just as all of scripture, Luke just had to do some work in order to eliminate the barriers that stood in the way of him writing a gospel account.   We also have many barriers in our way from fully experiencing what the Bible has to teach us (such as language, culture, etc).  Most if not all of these barriers can be eliminated if we are willing to do some research, or “digging” as I like to say it.

I also like knowing that Luke goes on to write, and participate in the book of Acts.  During much of the book, he had to investigate as he had for his gospel; but during the second half of the book he was an assistant with Paul (16:10-17, 20:5-21:18, and 27:1-28:16 ‘notice his use of we and us.’)  We owe much to the diligence of Dr. Luke for our knowledge of the early church.

Starting next week, the devotional will not focus on the same subject from week to week.  We will try to look at various topics and answer questions we have about the scriptures.  Submit any questions or ideas for devotionals to Bro. Dewayne or Bro. A.J.
