Mothers Day
by A. J. Wilson

Proverbs 31 describes a virtuous woman, which I’m sure describes many of our mothers.

her price is far above rubies” v10, “She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.” v 26 “Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.”v 28 “Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.”

God knew the love he placed into ladies/mothers, and so He compares His own comforting to that of a mother.

“As one whom his mother comforteth , so will I comfort you; and ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem.” Isaiah 66:13

Many mothers begin their care for their children even before they are born, by prayer.  Children are a gift from God, so it is natural for prayer to envelope children from conception (and even before) through death.  This is what we find with Hannah, turning to God and praying for a son.

“So Hannah arose after they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat by the doorpost of the tabernacle of the Lord. And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to the Lord and wept in anguish.”  1 Samuel 1:9-10

Even with all the care and love given to us by our mothers, we often fall into troubling times.  This happens with the Shunammite woman and her son in 2 Kings 4.  Yet she knows where to turn to for help, by seeking out the man of God.

“And so she departed, and went to the man of God at Mount Carmel. So it was, when the man of God saw her afar off, that he said to his servant Gehazi, "Look, the Shunammite woman!.” 2 Kings 4:25

My mother was a very important part of my life before she went to be with the Lord (14 ˝ years ago).  Mother’s Day is a hard time for me each year.  Losing her so early in life has affected me in many ways, but her encouragement still sticks with me to this day.  If your mother is still here with you, please show her how much you care.  Also remember to show all the ones you care about how much you love them, because you never know when something could happen.
