The Second Coming
by A.J. Wilson

“Then if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ!' or 'There!' do not believe it. For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.” Matthew 24:23-24

“For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God:” 1 Thessalonians 4:16 (a-b)

“But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you. For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night” 1 Thessalonians 5:1-2

“And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying: "Blessing and honor and glory and power Be to Him who sits on the throne, And to the Lamb, forever and ever!" Revelation 5:13

National Geographic will air a show on Wednesday, June 16 called “The Second Coming”; I saw some clips from the show on Nightline Friday night.  The show will profile three self-proclaimed Messiahs, one in England, another in Siberia, and one in the Philippines.  The man from England, David Shayler, claims to be the Son of God, but has no real following; and the man from Siberia, Vissarion, has a few thousand followers.  The third, Apollo C. Quiboloy from the Philippines, claims to have a following of 6 million people worldwide.  Especially Pastor Quiboloy has been able to convince many people that he is, the returning Messiah.  Now before you panic, thinking you have missed the second coming of Jesus, please take comfort from the references and discussion below.

Generally when “the Second Coming” is discussed, a combination of scriptures is addressed.  There are some verses concerning the rapture and other scriptures concerning Jesus’ triumphant return to reign.  When he returns for his people in the rapture (Math 24:30-31, 1 Cor. 15:52), there is no mention of judgment, only a gathering of his people.  Yet everyone will see the Lord in the heavens (Rev 5:13).  Then after the tribulation He will split the sky and come in on a white horse as the mighty conqueror and judge. (Psalms 7:11, Isaiah 65, Rev 19:11-16.)

So just by looking at a few of these “Second Coming” scriptures we can see that when Jesus returns it will be a worldwide event that no one can miss.  It is unfortunate that despite these great measures there will still be those who do not believe.  It does show that we need to continue all of efforts to reach the lost for the time may be coming soon for his true return.
